New to Birmingham? Read on... The jewel of the west midlands and the country's second city, Birmingham is the centre of British manufacturing and engineering. Thriving since it's exponential growth during the Industrial Revolution, the city has become a hub for business.
Birmingham's rapid industrial growth wet hand in hand with its rapid increase in population. Modern Birmingham is perhaps best known for it's cultural diversity with large Black and Asian communtities - one third of Brummies are non-white.
Birmingham has acquired an unfortunate name for it's unsightly architecture which, as a result of German bombing during the war, was mostly constructed in the 50's and 60's out of concrete. Thankfully recent redevelopment projects, including the demolition and replacement of the old 'Bull Ring' shopping centre, have transformed the city centre.
The city has recently played host to the second Ashes Test (England Vs Australia) at Warwickshire's Edgebaston cricket ground, a match which arguably set the series up for the most exciting finish in years.
